Chapter Fourteen

Millie

Ryan Dawson just said he loves me! I feel like a teenager all over again.

Do I love him? Truth be told, I don’t think that I ever stopped loving him. Knowing that JR is a part of him makes me love him more.

I look at him lying next to me. His eyes are wide and clear, his hair mussed from our lovemaking. I lean over and kiss him. Nipping his bottom lip, I run my hand over his scruff, loving the feel of it.

“I never stopped loving you, Ryan. I trust you’ll keep us safe. But remember, we’re here to protect you, too. We may not be a traditional family, but we are a family all the same.”

He closes his eyes at my words and takes my hand from where it’s resting on his face. He kisses my palm as he looks at me.

“I’m so sorry for all the pain I caused you. I promise to be the best dad for JR. And those motherfuckers who hurt JR and Violet? I swear on my life, they will pay for what they did.”

Fear trickles through me hearing these words. I catch glimpses of Ryan as he was in high school—the boy who stood up to bullies. He’s different now, a cop, bound by the law. But the look in his eyes... it’s like vengeance is right there, barely held back.

“Please, promise me that you will not do anything stupid.”

He laughs at my words, and the sound is menacing and a bit evil.

Kissing my palm again, he says, “I promise to abide by the law. However, I will not let them harm you or those kids again.”

What the fuck does that even mean?

“Ryan.”

“No more talk.” He kisses me senselessly.

He’s shifting the topic, and I want to keep talking, but his hands, roaming all over me, make me lose my train of thought.

The next morning, I wake up to an empty bed. Sitting up, I scan the room—no Ryan. There’s a folded note on my phone. I grab it and start reading.

Millie,

I had to go to work. Working on a possible lead. Let JR know I will do my best to see him tonight. Stay safe.

LoveRyan.

In Ryan’s typically cryptic style, his note leaves me with more questions than answers.

I’m heading to Geraldine’s next; in a small town like Pleasant Bay, where gossip flows like water, she’s bound to know something. It’s rumored she coaxed Ryan back here, so if there’s anyone clued into what’s going on now, it’s her.

Geraldine might not look it, but she’s definitely in the loop in a town where everyone knows everyone’s business. First, though, I grab my clothes and rush home for a quick shower and change—essential after last night’s events.

I am showered, dressed, and out the door an hour later. I grab a couple of cinnamon rolls from Mandy’s and head over to Geraldine’s house.

Not surprisingly, I find her working in her flower beds near the front of the house.

“Good morning,” I call as I head up the walkway.
